The Beavers and Cubs have had
a couple of visits from the Raptor Foundation. They have learn't about
both Owls and other Raptors (Birds of Prey), how they live in the wild,
what they eat, where they can be found etc. Here are a few pictures
from their visits :
What Is a Raptor?
All birds share some common features, such as feathers, wings, laying
eggs and being warm-blooded. However, there are certain characteristics
that set the group of birds called raptors apart from other birds.
The word raptor comes from the Latin word “rapere” which means to seize
or plunder. Today, the word is used to describe a group of birds also
known as birds of prey. Raptors are characterized
by a hooked beak, strong feet with sharp talons, keen eyesight, and
a carnivorous diet. Hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls are examples of
raptors.
What Do They Eat?
Raptors are birds of prey that eat other animals. Their diet includes
small mammals (mice, squirrels, rabbits, etc.), fish, reptiles, and
frogs and toads. Some will even chase after birds (including other raptors)
and eat them. Many raptors will also eat insects they catch in mid-air.
